The main thing is to make sure that the exchange of data between the user and the server is protected (i.e, logging in). You should use SSL on those pages. This will require you to get a server certificate for your site, but there are many ways to do this freely or cheaply. You web host might have one available that you can use. There are also sites that will create one for you for free. You only need to make those pages with data you wish to protect SSL enabled, not the entire site. Make sure that there's adequate protection on the database holding the information. Web hosts do a good job of this in most cases, but if you're hosting your own web server and the database lives on that, apply all security patches keep it maintained properly for security. The CMS will need to access the database in the background, so make sure you create a specific user account with a difficult password for that access. Do ont use a regular user account (even your own) for this purpose. You can add an additional level of protection to your sensitive data by encrypting it in the database table itself. Most database products (MySQL, Oracle) have built-in functions that can encrypt data as it inserts it in the table, and can reverse it when you need to access it. You can leave the user's name unencrypted, but encrypt the password and email address. One other thing: set and enforce lengths on user names and passwords. Longer passwords == more security for the user. You may have seen these recently in various places, you may have heard people talking about them in the realm of mobile and wondered what the heck they are. Quick response codes (known as "QR" codes) are a very convenient way to display a small bit of information that is easily scanned and processed typically by mobile devices. Allowing physical items to almost become interactive, by providing information that is easily scanned like a website URL.

To make a simpler analogy, most people are familiar with Universal Product codes (known as UPC codes). Everything you buy at the grocery store (and almost any store these days) has one of those that the cashier will scan. The computer then immediately knows what the product is based on the code that it picked up.

Does anyone remember the days of grocery shopping and the cashier had to punch in the prices and codes for every single item you purchased.

They had to memorize most of these in their head and if they forgot? They had to pickup the loud phone, make an announcement in the store asking for someone in that department to help them out.

Think of QR codes as UPC codes but instead they're used in a much broader spectrum, not just to 'identify' products but to convey 'information' of some kind.

Basic QR Code Usage

The most basic (and popular use) of QR codes is to display website information (a website address). Lets say you're at a trade show and you're walking by my booth. You want to find out more information about my company, so you open up your phone and start fumbling away trying to type in some long URL (that is on my display) into your browser, and off you go.

The other option would be for me to display a QR code (on my display), you take your phone and scan it just like cashiers scan items at the grocery store, and your phone automatically starts loading my website, how is that for convenience?

What about billboards outside on the street, or bus shelters while waiting for public transportation.

You can place these little codes anywhere. People with free scanners on their phones (iPhones, BlackBerrys, Androids, Nokia, etc.) can quickly scan the QR code and find out more information, like opening up a website.

Whole Foods Market (popular in the US/Canada) uses these in their stores. I was recently sitting down to have a bite to eat at the one in Yorkville Toronto, and on the table where I was sitting was a table tent with two QR codes.

It was obvious where they would take me if I scanned them, one would take me to their twitter account, the other would take me to their facebook page.

If I was interested in checking out their twitter or facebook page, rather than opening up each respective app and going to the search function and typing in their name etc. (I likely wouldn't, too much effort) I could pick up my phone, scan the QR code and automatically open each page!

Airline Boarding Pass

This is an interesting one because you use your mobile to display the QR code rather than scan it. :)

In this case, the airline sends you a QR code that you display on the screen of your phone. This allows the airline while at the airport to scan your unique QR code which represents your passenger information (your digital boarding pass).

Wine Bottles

A lot of vineyards are placing QR codes on their bottle labels. When you're out and try a bottle you like, you want to find out more information, or browsing in a wine shop, you may want more information. So rather than writing a long URL out (which most people aren't going to go type in for lack of convenience), you can scan the bottle just like the cashier will. The only difference is your QR code scan is to give you more information on the wine/vineyard (sales stuff), and the UPC scan is to identify the item in stock and figure out how much of your money to take.

These QR codes are all over the place in Asia, and they're becoming more and more common in Europe and North America. Just walk around and you'll start noticing these things.

Just the other day while doing a keynote presentation at a local college on social media, there was a big banner up for birth control, HUGE banner. At the bottom of the banner was a ….. you guessed it, QR code:

What They're NOT For

I've seen people put QR codes on their website and quite frankly that just defeats the purpose and nobody will ever scan it. The point is to take people from the physical world to the online world. If someone is already browsing your website, facebook page, twitter, some online 'property', they're already there. If I'm on my phone, I can exactly scan my screen of my phone with my phone's camera now can I?

What determines the success of what you put there is how it's read and consumed. So that means the scanner has to know what to do with the 'text' it reveals after scanning the QR code. So almost every scanner I'm aware of knows what a url is and will open it for you. Most will allow you to 'start' a text message (it will not create/send one for you). But when get into more complicated (not as popular) usage, they won't always work.

I have an app on my iPhone that does not handle address book entries, while the other one does. So even though you can represent many things with a QR code, it's ultimately up to the scanner to understand what to do with the text and that is why the URL is the most popular, as it's the most widely used and supported by all QR code scanners.

I did however put it up on amazon.com, but basically I just put it there so I wouldn't have to do it later. So now here comes this month, I've moved into my new house and decide to market my book. I go to amazon to change some info in the description and imagine my surprise when I see two different sellers, selling my book as a used book and cheaply at that. I had already started marketing that day and someone told me they had just bought a copy of the "3 dollar" book (that's what they were selling for) I knew this to be true as my ranking went from 1.8 million to 130,000 in sales rank. I wrote the people telling them they could not have my book as they were all accounted for. They told me check my sources because they have 6 copies! So I ordered all the books to see how they were going to deliver since I knew they couldnt have any copies, me being the publisher and all and knowing where every book I had printed was. Imagine my surprise when I open my mailbox today and find they did have my book and sent it to me! Now I'm thinking the only person that could've given them my book is the printer I sub-contracted out to. No way anyone else could do it. I did give out a few copies to friends, but EVERY copy was signed and these are unsigned books. I'm trying to get them to tell me specifically who sold them or gave them the books, but they avoid those questions in my emails and I only get voicemail when I call them. Well let me start by saying that I am very sorry that this has happened to you. I would start by contacting the company that printed your book and see if they are willing/can tell you anything. I would recommend contacting a lawyer or at the very least posting this in the Yahoo legal section to get some very general advice. Good luck!

A recent fraud involving Amazon notification emails has been making the rounds online with the following on the subject line:

Subject:   Your order has been successfully cancelled.

But instead of being sent by Amazon.com, this message actually comes from spoofed emails (in this case, from orders@amazon.com). The link embedded in the email will usually take you to a login page designed to look like it's really Amazon.com so as to collect your login details.

Because of the subject, Amazon users who are actually waiting for some pending orders will feel compelled to contact Amazon.com about the cancellation.

Not only that, there are also tons of other fraudulent transactions being done through Amazon.

- A man pleaded guilty in a fraud accusation that involves £500,000.

He and a bunch of other people teamed up and allegedly used stolen credit card information to buy his own songs on Amazon and iTunes.

Lamar Johnson, a 19-year old from Wolverhampton, was charged one count of conspiracy to defraud along with 11 others.

They reportedly downloaded the songs more than 6,000 times between January 2008 and June 2009 in order to get royalties from the sales.

According to Johnson, he was responsible for around 2,000 of the downloads.

- Another incident involved someone who paid $ 400 for gold items he bought but since the seller was out of stock already, the order was cancelled.

However, according to the poster, Amazon put a hold on his credit card and would not release any funds.

- Someone purchased a Sony digital camera with a bunch of accessories on Amazon and was delighted that he was given a free delivery. However, when the package arrived at their address, it turned out to be a randomly inappropriate book. He suspects that it might be because of some mistake on Amazon's part or a horrible mix up in the delivery contractor. But noticing that the package has his name and address on it just right and that it appears to have been tampered with, he feared that there was some sort of theft or fraud involved.

- A customer bought a laptop through Amazon and was, strangely enough, sent a used laptop. But since the card used in the transaction was closed by the customer already, a USD 40 check was issued as refund instead. However, when it was deposited on the bank, it was discovered that the check is a fraud.
While it is certainly understandable for fraud victims to blame Amazon and wish them all the bad luck, let's also keep in mind that customers also have their responsibilities. Note to self: If you don't want to suffer from horrible customer service and if a transaction looks shady early on, then just buy in a physical store.
